Should Lord Haw-Haw Have Been Hanged?
My Books and Articles (under construction)
Lord Haw-Haw (William Joyce) still sparks controversy over 60 years on. I am going to explore what he done, why people wanted him hanged and why people do not agree with him being hanged. Then try to answer the question; should he have been hanged?
William Joyce was an avid fascist who joined the British Fascist Party but was expelled from the party due to his extreme views on Jews. William Joyce; having been expelled from the British Fascist Party moved with his wife to Germany. In Germany Joyce soon rose to be the top guy on the German propaganda radio broadcasting to Britain.
Here are some quotes to show you the kind of thing he would broadcast:
"Every German interest favours the maintenance of peace in the Balkans"
"No significant resistance along the cost of Norway"
"The British Ministry of Misinformation has been conducting a systematic campaign of frightening British women and girls"
As you can see this would annoy most people in Britain. As the name Lord Haw-Haw suggests he was considered quite a joke to most people. However, some believed him.
Now, you have the background let's move on and work out if William Joyce should have been hanged.
@pagebreak
Treason is defined as: "under the law of the United Kingdom, high treason is the crime of disloyalty to the sovereign amounting to an intention to undermine their authority or the actual attempt to do so". Therefore you must be British to be tried for High treason in Britain.
Treason is defined as: "under the law of the United Kingdom, high treason is the crime of disloyalty to the sovereign amounting to an intention to undermine their authority or the actual attempt to do so". Therefore you must be British to be tried for High treason in Britain.
But, Joyce was not British he was born in America and grew up in Ireland when it was not part of Great Britain and actually had German citizenship. As a result legally Joyce could not be tried for High Treason and subsequently not be allowed to be hanged.
Though one must consider the time… It is 1945, the war has just ended, the people want justice and Joyce is the most hated man in Britain after Hitler who is dead.
So I can now conclude that legally Joyce should not have been executed and the Judge should be legally facing a murder sentence. But, the British government had no choice so you can see form the start his eventual execution was inevitable.

I cannot believe he was actually hanged! Stories like this fascinate me. More coming?» left by Connor Davidson(1) (2 years 296 days ago.)
I was not surprised as the people, papers and government were against him.
Had he not been hanged he would have been murdered - the people hated him so much. Thanks for the comment.

Con! It was a good read for me. When I saw the title I thought you're talking about Lord Jesus. But when I read the whole article it's about WJ. Good infos which was unknown for me before. Thanks...» left by Connor Davidson(1) (2 years 294 days ago.)
If it was about Jesus I would be being a little rude.
Thanks for the comment.

Great article, Connor. You made a good argument--I'm not much for capital punishment anyway. But hating someone for some of their beliefs, certainly doesn't constitute a death sentence I wouldn't think.Have a good week.Sandra» left by Connor Davidson(1) (2 years 294 days ago.)
He was not hanged for his beliefs only. He took pleasure in scaring the British people and had a history of violence.
Thanks for the comment.

Hi Connor, thank you for all the interesting information you bring my way. I hadn't heard of this. And legally (not to mentione ethically) it seems this man did nothing worthy of death. Great info, with many thoughts to think :-)Blessings,Teresa» left by Connor Davidson(1) (2 years 293 days ago.)
In some aspects I agree.
